I am really enjyoing our class discussion and listen to others opinion. Philosophy is still new to me, and I have a hard time grasping the ideas of views. From last class, we were discussing about reflective equilibrium, and it is something that I experience in my daily life.I am influenced by two distinctly different cultures ( South Korean and American), and I was raised by Korean parents, especially a father who earned his PhD in Physical chemistry, and he also is a southern baptist minister. My childhood was influenced by mixture of different elements, the rich experiences gave me a rich view of life. There are times I battle between two culture to fulfill each needs; either to make my parents proud or let myself to be free. When we moved back to America six years ago, I had to find myself who I really am, and I had to survive this new life in America.I am in a relationship with a person who is polar opposite in various ways. He is Caucasian, male, art background, liberal, and Episcopalian. We have fallen in love since the first night we met, ad he is the best thing that ever happened in my life. Love is a powerful tool to understand each others differences and overcome misunderstanding. Despite we are madly in love, we have our core values, and often time they are very different from each other. For about few months we first started seeing each other, they were times that we would have heated discussions over something very trivial, or something that we strongly believe in. However, We have always found a way to discuss our differences. Reflective equilibrium exists differently to my parents compared to my boyfriend. Between me and my parents, we try not to bring up any topics that would make each other since there are topics that we have a strong opposing view from each other. In order to keep the civil environment, we usually don't bring up topics that would end up upsetting everyone in the room.We generate patterns as we live, and when we encounters situation that are different from our previous patterns of life, we undergo negative experience or emotion. Transitioning from South Korea to America, and one culture to the other, I went through a big deal of culture shock. Living in two different cultures were full of confusion, and it took me a while to generate a pattern' in myself, the pattern that I am in control.
