I was once on Mare Island, San Francisco Bay and heard the tale. Back in the 1500 s Spanish explorers upon laeving the bay left several horses on this small island for possible future use and so the nearby natives would not take them and probably for less baggage on the way home. Hundreds of years later other explorers found the island flourishing with many healthy horses, almost all were mares (female) and only a few studs (males). Was this because the males systematically killed off the young males? This courted group extinction. Was there an extraordinary percentage of female births over many years? Highly unlikely! Or was it a mixture of these and/or other circumstances which worked to maintain a sustainable population on this small island? The environment set the pattern of behavior of this group for this group to survive, stay healthy, and to flourish and yet maintain their numbers. Entropy is the measure of the disorder (or order) that exist in a system. Without a certain degree of order a system will not remain stable, will revert to back to chaos, and then on to eventual annihilation of that system. And so I leave you with this old Gowachim riddle: Question: Who governs the governors? Answer: Entropy. (Herbert). And I add this note of interpretation: the governors in this riddle means creators of order, not simply the sociopolitical philosophers.Herbert, Frank. The Dosadi Experiment.
